professional photographs: how often?

Before Mason was born, I researched photographers to take pictures of all three of us soon after we arrived home from the hospital. Amanda Gilley came to our home when Mason was six days old for his newborn shoot, and I absolutely love how the photos turned out. (More on this later.) Expecting moms, if you want professional photographs of your newborn, do the groundwork now to set this up. You won't have time or energy to do it once the baby is born.

My baby's looks are changing rapidly, and I want to preserve his various stages with professional photographs, but I'm torn about how often to have them taken. If "monthly" is the answer, I've already missed Mason's first month! Professional newborn photos were worth the splurge. What other ages are worth the splurge of hiring a professional?

Current mamas, please chime in. Should I call Amanda for Mason's six-month and/or one-year photos, and possibly go to a less expensive place for the three-month and nine-month marks? Or should I aim for photographing him more often using a cheaper venue, or less often with a more experienced photographer? What months during the first year are key to capture? If you've had your children's pictures taken at Target, Babies R Us, Picture People, or any of those types of operations, please let me know your thoughts on them. Thanks for your advice!

We've done professional 4, 8, and 12 month pictures for our kids' panels. Every other picture has been by either Portrait People, Picture People, or friends with really great cameras!!! One of my favorite things we did was have their hand and foot prints made in clay so I always have a record of how small those feet and hands were at one point! I can't wait to see you newborn pictures :)

Beautiful!! We've been bad about professional photos, though Abel has always captured great photos with our regular camera. Our newborn photos of Lucas (a definite splurge) are something I cherish so much. With Nathaniel I thought we could do them ourselves and am disappointed with the results. We had pictures taken at picture people of Lucas about once a year; a good friend and amateur photographer has taken Lucas's Christmas photo for two years in a row and this summer we had professional shots done of Lucas, Nathaniel, their cousin Sawyer and my parents. So, we've done a big mix of things!!

We did our 1st professional photography session at around 3 or 4 months. Then again at 5,6,8, and 12, but only because our photographer was having a crazy good deal. 20 minute session, 20 photos, $50! I would shoot for every 4 months, if possible/affordable. A lot of photographers have a package deals for the whole 1st year. Or consider investing in a decent camera to cut down on costs. Last word of advice, think quality, not quantity. 10 or so really good photos is plenty. You really don't need 100 photos, including all the "bad" ones. You also dont need canvas or other "extras" they might try to sell you on.

What a gorgeous picture! I had "professional" (Sears) pictures taken at one month. We didn't do them again until 6 months. Once I got interested in photography, I was pretty happy photographing Emerson on my own. I have seen lots of photographers do whole first year packages, following up every few months. I would definitely do every few months, even if it is just at a mall portrait place, especially if you want to be in the pictures too. And there are normally lots of Groupons/Living Social/etc. deals floating around for photography, especially around the holidays.

great picture! we have done a few professional sessions- newborn, first birthday and 18 months (holiday card photos) and are doing another one later this fall. Also, we have had good luck at Picture People. I am surprised that they get so many great pictures and I really like the simple white background. PP is nice too because they don't have a limit on the number of pictures they take.

OK so I am not a momma but do have an opinion on the matter. A girlfriend of mine hires a prof photog all the time. And at first I thought she was crazy. But she found a guy who will do it for like $50 or $80 an hour and just give her a disk. She prints them at Walgreens. But the smartest thing she does is hire him to come for an hour or two at big gatherings like birthday parties. So she always has amazing photos and none of the stress involved in taking them. You might see if you can find someone similar who is maybe in art school. Who will do a one hour session at a decent price and then give you the disk so you don't have to pay for expensive printing. Just an idea...

If you want to shop around for pricing, I know A LOT of photographers. Some are full-time professionals, others just hobbyists. All are very talented.

Love the picture. I agree with the quality not quantity. I took newborn, yr 1 and highschool graduation at a private professional photographer. Then yearly pictures were done at less expensive places. Today the two that hang on the wall are year 1 and high school graduation.

We hired a professional photographer for newborn (~2 months because I didn't get my act together for real newborn photos), 1st birthday, and 2nd birthday. I love all of these pictures and am really happy to have paid for them. I made sure to find someone who would provide good, edited photos on a CD so that I could print and use how I wanted. But, that can be costly. We've gone to Sears for other pictures... Easter, Christmas, etc.... and we get the CD there too. I go to the Sears at Landmark Mall, which is never crowded, and they always manage to get cute pics. We also take a lot of our own pictures. I made an effort to take some pictures on every month-birthday for the first year.
